President Donald Trump will announce an NFL- led investigation into the league’s handling “inappropriate conduct” by players during the protests during the national anthem, the White House announced Monday.
The president will announce the move in a press conference at the White Senate, the administration said.
Trump’s announcement comes as several NFL owners have publicly blamed players for their teams’ handling of the protests.
The White House has said that Trump was “not personally involved” in determining the results of the investigation, but the president’s announcement was a significant move to acknowledge what many of his fellow players have said.
President Trump addresses a joint session of Congress in March.
The president also called on NFL owners to resign if they continue to protest during the anthem.
The NFL’s first-ever investigation into players protesting the anthem is set to begin Monday, the league said in a statement.
The White House said the president will not directly comment on the investigation.
But he will call for players to be more “cautious” in future, the statement said.
The NFL has already begun issuing suspensions and fines for players who are not fully cooperative.
